Youth in Philanthropy

During the 2016-17 school year, the W.C. Miller Collegiate Youth in Philanthropy group functioned as part of the school’s student council, and was supervised by teacher Laura Thiessen. In recent years, through fundraising efforts and contributions from the Altona Community Foundation, the YIP group had accumulated enough money in its account to grant $4,800 this year to community organizations supporting children and education. Following are the organizations they supported:

Katie Cares – $1,500 – Katie’s Cottage is planning on building a safe walking path between the cottage and Boundary Trails Hospital, which would be beautified with benches and flowers.

Altona Curling Club – $1,000 – to replace outdated junior curling equipment that is used by 60-100 junior curlers every year.

Altona’s Build a Village Foundation – $1,300 – to help support more families in their journey to Altona.

Youth for Christ Altona – $1,000 – to help purchase outdoor chairs, tables, and barbeque supplies to promote activities at the Station.
